Most people do not realize how dangerous a clogged dryer vent can be. If it is not cleaned regularly can cause several serious issues:
Fire hazard – First, clogged one prevents hot, moist air from properly escaping the dryer. This trapped air builds up and overheats the dryer, increasing the risk of a fire starting inside the dryer or in the vent itself.
Waste of energy – Then, when it is restricted, it must work much harder to push air through the vent. This wastes energy and increases drying time.
Premature dryer failure – Also, the excess heat and strain on the dryer motor from a restricted one can damage components and shorten the dryer’s lifespan.
Moisture damage – In addition, trapped moisture from a clogged one can cause wet walls, insulation, or floors. This moisture creates an ideal environment for mold and rot.
Poor drying performance – Also, when it is restricted, less air moves through the dryer drum during operation. This results in wet or damp clothes even after a full cycle.
Unpleasant smells – Finally, moisture and lint buildup in a clogged vent can lead to musty or mildewy odors.
To avoid these issues, dryer vent should be cleaned regularly:
Rigid metal vents – Clean every 1-3 years by disconnecting the it and using a dryer vent brush or vacuum hose attachment.
Flexible plastic vents – Inspect for cracks, tears or crushes after every 500 drying cycles. Replace as needed. Vacuum or brush out lint buildup.
Dryer lint screens – Clean after every use to prevent lint from entering it.
An accumulated 1/2 inch of lint in the dryer vent or exhaust duct poses a significant fire risk. If you notice any of the issues mentioned above, or if your dryer seems to be taking longer than normal to dry clothes, having your dryer vent and exhaust duct professionally cleaned is recommended.
